Paris Saint-Germain faces Chelsea in Sunday's FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with coach Luis Enrique emphasizing his "team of stars" philosophy that has transformed the French champions into the world's best club side.
After losing superstars Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar, PSG has already claimed the Champions League, Ligue 1, and Coupe de France titles this season. Victory on Sunday would confirm their status as the planet's top team.
"We have 11 stars -- that's football," Luis Enrique told reporters Friday. "We don't just want one main player. We want 11 stars, maybe 14-15 in our squad, and that's the commitment we have from our directors and president."
The former Barcelona coach explained his approach: "This team is above individual players and we are leaders because of this. We will lose at some point, that's the way it goes, and we do want stars -- but only as a team."
From superstars to super team
PSG's journey to the final included dominant victories over European giants. They demolished Real Madrid 4-0 in the semifinal after beating Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid earlier in the tournament. Their 5-0 Champions League final triumph over Inter Milan showcased their collective strength.
However, Luis Enrique warned against complacency ahead of facing Chelsea. "If you think this game will be a walk in the park, you really don't know what football is about," he said. "Chelsea won the Conference League, they are a growing team. I love Enzo Maresca as a coach because his team, they always go to attack and they press really well."
He added: "It's very important for us to be aware of how difficult this game is going to be. Chelsea have talented individuals and they can defend under pressure. Their team is on par with us."
Captain praises collective strength
PSG captain Marquinhos, who has been with the club since 2013, believes this squad surpasses all previous iterations despite playing alongside legends including Mbappé, Neymar, Messi, and Zlatan Ibrahimović.
"In terms of results, this is definitely the best team I have been in at PSG," the 31-year-old said. "I have played with some amazing players who have achieved incredible things in football -- players who have won more than these players right now. But taking it all into consideration, this is the team that has done most collectively."
Marquinhos stressed the opportunity's significance: "We are aware of the importance of this match. It's a golden opportunity in a competition that happens every four years."
