To be honest, most people are a little fed up with watching the same scenario. Novak Djokovic, the greatest to ever hold a racket, is still around, but it seems more and more that the audience wants a refresher. And let's be honest ; a new generation has arrived. Many in the tennis world are already talking about a generational shift, and the main names on the front pages are no longer Novak, Nadal or Federer, but Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
At Roland Garros, we finally saw what we had long desired. Two young lions, in a final that lasted five hours and 29 minutes! The hall was filled to the last seat, and what these two showed was simply amazing.
John McEnroe reacts
The famous John McEnroe was among the first to react:
"You could say that both of them would be able to beat Nadal at his peak. Will one of them win 20 or 24 Grand Slams? No, because that level is very difficult to reach. But, with these two, it's like watching the NBA and saying that nobody can be better than Michael Jordan. Tennis is at the highest level I've ever seen."
Mats Wilander stressed:
"I never thought I'd say this, but Carlos and Jannik are playing faster than ever. Federer and Nadal have played good finals, but nothing close to this."
And when one Roger Federer calls and posts a picture with both of them, along with the words:
"Three winners today in Paris: Karlos Alkaras, Janik Siner and the wonderful sport of tennis. What a match!" – you know it was a special moment.
Rod Laver singled out the young Spaniard in particular:
"I am very happy for Carlos Alkaras. He has five Grand Slams and is only 22 years old! My heart also goes out to Janik Siner, who showed absolute class, despite the defeat. What a match, thank you both."
Billie Jean King also shared her emotions:
"Carlos Alcaraz's incredible comeback at Roland Garros! After being down in sets and saving three match points in the fourth... one of the best matches I've seen."
And in the end, Martina Navratilova summed it all up with one sentence:
"Hats off to warriors and champions."
