The experienced 35-year-old from Russia, Alexander Volkov, is currently not entering the cage, but that's why he's very carefully watching everything that happens at the top of the heavyweight division. Information is circulating more and more loudly in the media that they could soon see a fight between the interim champion Tom Aspinall and the former challenger Cyril Gane. And exactly against those two, this tall fighter was already in the octagon.

– "I think the fight is 50-50," Volkov told MMA Junkie. – "Both are very good. Cyril Gane is great when it comes to movement, footwork, and he's not that bad on the ground anymore. He seriously started working on grappling and ground skills. The question is how the fight will go and how both will be prepared."

First hand analysis

Back in 2022, Volkov lost to the Briton at the UFC Fight Night 204 event, and in a way that surprised everyone – submission in the first round. However, after that defeat, he came back in style and scored four victories. However, the end of 2024 was not a happy one for him – he lost to the French at UFC 310, in a match that was disputed by many because of the referee's decision.

– "From a technical point of view, when I fought both of them, Aspinall looked better to me," he added. – "But that doesn't have to mean anything in the real fight. Gane will certainly be very motivated because it's about the title. Ultimately, everything depends on the preparation and the opening of the match."

This tall Russian is still very dangerous and is aware that everything is changing fast. If the right opportunity opens up, hardly anyone will want to have him as an opponent. And while he is waiting for a new chance, there are many who are waiting for their chance, wanting to meet him face to face.

Who his opponent will be will be interesting to find out.
